History

The Hodgins Family has been in the printing business since 1957. With the third generation now active in the management of the company, you could say that printing is part of who we are. We have experienced first hand the dramatic changes in print technology as well as the changes in how the world does business. We have found our own unique way of combining the technologies that drive business, the technologies that produce print and the art of old world craftsmanship.

Highlights over the years...

1957   John Hodgins buys his first printing press, a Chandler & Price 10 x 15 handfed letterpress and begins printing in his garage.

1962   John Hodgins buys the building at 30 Seaver Place, Batavia, NY and opens business under the name of Batavia Press. "The Little Red House on Seaver Place"

1971   Batavia Press is sold and Hodgins Printing is formed.

1973   Urban Renewal eliminates not only the "Little Red House", but Seaver place as well. A move to the former Miller-Mack Printing building at 117 Ross Street allows continued growth.

1974   Hodgins Engraving is founded by purchasing the assets of Case-Haus Photoengraving; a 40-year-old garage based plate-making business. The engraving business focuses on plate making for the printing trade.

1983   Hodgins Engraving and Hodgins Printing become separate companies, with Bob Hodgins as the owner of Hodgins Engraving, leasing space at 56 Harvester Avenue and concentrating on services to the trade, while Hodgins Printing continues as a commercial printer. Hodgins Engraving manufactures etched printing dies as well as rubber stamps and engraved signs.

1986   Growth allows the purchase of the former Moose Lodge at 32 Ellicott Street and 1 Evans Street. Expansion of services to the trade continues with thermography, foil stamping, embossing, die cutting and genuine engraving. Market focus continues to be the printing trade, with an emphasis on high-end stationery.

2001   Further growth requires another move, to 3817 West Main Street. A new 36,000 square foot plant provides opportunity for new equipment and continued growth. Letterpress printing, where we started so many years ago, re-gains popularity and we come back to our roots by easily adding it to our product mix. E-commerce development further defines our market strategy and helps us serve our print distributors with a level of connectivity not dreamed of 50 years before.
